Cardinals at the Window’s mission is to collect and disseminate funds and resources to those in need across North Carolina.
On September 26 2024, Hurricane Helene made landfall and began to ravage the region of Western North Carolina. The storm was so massive, that it swallowed all of Florida & spread into the Eastern seaboard. Helene hit as a Cat4 storm, and continued into the Southeast as a Cat2. Her winds and rains, including the outer bands, sat on the region for nearly two days. Her destruction is unfathomable.
Many people are still missing. Millions of us are living without water, food, fuel, cell service, electricity, and medicine - and it remains so for the foreseeable future. So many people are hurting. So many friends, beloveds, community icons, artists, workers, small businesses have lost everything in the wake of Hurricane Helene.
We are raising funds to best support the people most directly impacted by Hurricane Helene. The only sustainable aid coming into the region is from grassroots mutual aid organizers & autonomous collectives of people on the ground. They are getting urgently needed supplies & resources directly to the people who need it most. Thousands of dollars worth of potable water, food, and survival supplies has already been distributed in the region to through the efforts. It is crucial that we continue to send funds their way, as the situation is dire and the road to recovery is long.
Immediately after Hurricane Helene, ALL major infrastructure to enter & exist the region of Western North Carolina was destroyed. This includes all major highways to the North, South, East, & West. Every road collapsed, and for a time being - our region was only accessible by air. Entire homes floated in rivers that never existed before, waterlines were compromised, thousands of trees were ripped from their roots, rivers flooded and destroyed entire towns, contaminating all of the water & land in its path. The region does not have the infrastructure to sustain this.
We are all in a climate crisis fueled by the same ruling class pillaging resourced lands for profit globally. We are all impacted. Trust me, in living through this my heart is ever more so with Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, Congo, Sudan, PR, Hawai’i and in particular with the Qualla Boundary Eastern Band Cherokee.
All we have is each other.
And, still, I Love The Earth.
Cardinals at the Window Scholarship Fund - Direct Aid Info
Initiated by Hunter Savoy & Ryan Gustafson, artists & musicians based in WNC, the Scholarship Pillar of Cardinals At The Window aims to provide extended and flexible lines of financial support to creatives whose practices and subsequent livelihoods have been significantly impacted in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene.
The Scholarship fund is an ongoing monthly stipend, one time payout, or specific request of funds based on the need of each artist who applies. The scholarship is intended to be utilized as a net of support for creatives throughout the Western North Carolina region. We know how much energy goes into building a practice, sustaining it, resourcing it - and we know how defeating it is to lose the ability to produce creative work overnight. We do not want more artists to turn their backs on their creative practice due to needs of survival. We hope that the Scholarship fund will be a support line for artists to keep working in their fields, even in the face of disaster.
Please reach out to us at cardinals@theglowmgmt.com to request a brief application for direct aid.
